The solitary work on the oceans is a constant struggle with the elements, the uncertainty is a constant companion of the fshermen. So it is not surprising if they pray for divine support and honour their saints espe-cially, even in times of speedboats and GPS.

The most important of their celebrations in Spain is the one for the Virgen del Carmen, Madonna of the sea and patron saint of the fs-hers and seamen. Already in the Middle Ages people believed that Maria actually meant “star of the sea” and the celebrations for the Carmelite Virgin had also been known since a lot of time. Au XVIIIe siècle, un amiral de la marine espagnole exi-gea pour la première fois la célébra-tion de cette sainte et elle fnit ainsi par devenir la patronne des marins. Elle est toujours fêtée de nos jours avec des processions, feux d’artifce, messes et concerts. Ces célébrations ont lieu tous les ans autour du 16 juillet en souvenir à la date de son apparition à un certain Simon Stock en 1251.
